If you are not eligible for a .com.au or .net.au domain name there may be another Australian domain name
extension that is more appropriate for your organisation.
For example, org.au or .asn.au domain
name registration is open to Australian incorporated associations, political
parties, trade unions, sporting or special interest clubs. You will need to
provide supporting evidence (such as registration numbers) of your organisation
in order to register one these names.
The id.au extension
can be registered by any Australian citizen or resident; however, please note
that id.au cannot be registered for commercial ventures - it is for
personal/hobby use only.
Another option is to register a "global" domain name such as those
ending in .com, .net, .org, .info, or .biz as these domain name extensions
are not subject to eligibility criteria and are
available for registration to any individual or organisation anywhere in the
world. Also, you do not have to host your website overseas to register a
name with one of these extensions - you can still host
your website in Australia.
After .com.au, the .com extension is most sought after for businesses, so
if you have a .com name in mind, it's best to register it as soon as possible.
Tens of thousands of .com names are registered every day, many of them to "domainers";
people who have no intention of using the name, but to resell it at a much
higher price than what registration costs!
